  • Gen Y’s, however, should be thinking of multiple curves. Quite likely, you will have ups, downs, and do-overs. For you, the career curve framework might better be called career carillon, because the line of your career is likely to resemble a series of bell curves

      Interesting that it specifically addresses the Gen Y. Does this mean Baby Boomers are exempt? I'd say Baby Boomers will also experience the career carillon since they are living into their 90s and are good to work for another 10, 20 or more years. Then there's Gen X who are still fairly young and have half of their careers left still - they will probably experience career carillons. Also, what about Gen Z? Will Gen Z have these career curves, or will Gen Z be even more fluid in their careers?

      This is a good point. I have many other priorities and interests in my life. I am able to handle 9-5, five days a week, but realistically I would prefer either fewer hours per week or to work one of the weekend days so that I would have a free day during regular work hours.

      I like some routine, but I get bored if my analytical and creative sides are not engaged. If I have the time to take care of myself and keep my energies levels up, then I am more open to spontaneity. I like being able to roughly make my own schedule, but I like other people setting up a few times where I need to be doing X task.

      This is a good point. This is when tracking expenses comes in handy to figure out how much one is spending, and then adjusting from there. Personally, when I started tracking my expenses, I was a little shocked by how much I spend, and it made me spend less because I was more aware of my spending.

    In Gratton's chapters 5 through 7 this week I especially enjoyed the thoughts she expressed about innovation and how technology will facilitate creativity and innovation in and between workplaces. It reminded me of a Creativity/ Innovation conference that I attended for 2 years in 2011 & 2012 in Ontario. A group of over 100 creativity and innovation professionals from corporations like Disney, organizations like Facilitators without borders and entrepreneurs like those from FlipSkills & ThinkX come together for 4 days to share the latest and the greatest with each other. It's worth a look and I'd encourage you to register.

    This website was used by an entrepreneur I know. Basically it is like the marketplace InnoCentive mentioned in Chapter 5 of The Shift, however it is based around logo design. Basically entrepreneurs put out a call or contest for the logo you would like, with an explanation of what its being used for, who the audience is etc. Then graphic designers place in entries. Once the contest is over you choose your favourite one and they get paid the prize. It costs $29 to start a contest and then whatever you are willing to pay for your prize. My friend who used it was very successful, and as soon as I read about InnoCentive it made me think of this! I can image there will be more websites like this in the future

People compare the software's output with the image of the original text to correct errors and formatting. Many languages are represented and many regional or other types of communities exist.     This week I started on JobBank.gc.ca and searched my local market, York Region (as listed under "Basic LMI Resources - Where to Start" in our course notes). As I typically work with students, this particular site www.betakit.com and an article about funding for youth entrepreneurs was a great source of info to share with my students! Reza Moridi, Minister of Research and Innovation, was at Communitech this morning in Waterloo and announced a partnership with the Campus-Linked Accelerators (CLA) and On-Campus Entrepreneurship Activities (OCEA) to help students interested in building their own business gaining skills to succeed. The CLA is investing $5.8 million and the OCEA providing over $650,000.
